Social Responsibility

The Education University of Hong Kong (EdUHK) has established employment policies, procedures and staff support arrangements to guide employment-related matters and support a respectful and supportive working environment.  These arrangements cover recruitment and remuneration, workplace conduct, and staff communication.

1. Recruitment, Equal Opportunities and Remuneration

EdUHK is an equal opportunities employer committed to providing a fair and respectful working environment. The University does not tolerate discrimination or harassment in accordance with its policies and applicable legislation.

Recruitment and employment decisions are based on operational needs, job requirements, individual qualifications, relevant experience and work performance, without discrimination on grounds prohibited by applicable legislation or University policy.

The University’s remuneration arrangements take into account the qualifications and experience of individual staff members, together with the requirements and responsibilities of the relevant positions, and are administered in accordance with applicable appointment terms and University salary arrangements.

The University observes applicable Hong Kong employment legislation, including the Minimum Wage Ordinance where applicable.

2. Equal Opportunities and Non-discrimination

The University is committed to providing equal opportunities in employment and addressing discrimination and harassment in accordance with its policies and applicable legislation.  Its Equal Opportunities Policy covers staff, students and other persons having dealings with the University, including contract workers, service providers and applicants.

The University has established procedures for handling complaints concerning discrimination and harassment.  Workplace concerns are handled in accordance with the relevant procedures, with due regard to the circumstances and confidentiality of those involved.

For further information, please visit the Equal Opportunities Campus website.

3. Staff Associations

Under Article 27 of the Basic Law, Hong Kong residents have the freedom of association and the right and freedom to form and join trade unions.  The Employment Ordinance also provides statutory protection for employees in exercising specified trade union rights.

Under the Employment Ordinance, employees have the right to form or apply to register a trade union in accordance with the law, to become members or officers of a registered trade union, and to participate in trade union activities at appropriate times.  Employers are prohibited from preventing or deterring employees from exercising these rights, penalising or discriminating against employees for doing so, or making the relinquishment or non-exercise of these rights a condition of employment.

EdUHK also has staff associations that provide channels for staff to express their views and raise matters of concern relating to employment and the workplace.
